Maybe this is (but only partially to be honest) my shitty day speaking just I finally finished this and boy, do I have a lot to say.

And then, I recollect virtually of usa accept had a displeasure of coming together this guy at the bar who would JUST Non accept "no" for an answer, right? No thing how occupied you seem with your telephone or engrossed in conversation, there'southward ever this 1 dude who assumes that just because there'southward a woman at the bar, she's there to be striking on - and he oh-and so-bravely pushes forward, ignoring all the Not INTERESTED/NOT EVEN REMOTELY INTERESTED signs you continuously send his way.

Well, ladies and gents, Marcus, Lord Danvers, is the regency version of that guy at the bar.

And it's gross.

I recall reading this series when it first came out x years ago and, while moderately at best, I even so somewhat enjoyed it.

I cannot, with whole honesty, say the same thing now, because of the vibe this book is giving away.

To sum up shortly, the gist of the plot is - there are three Loring sisters and Marcus aka Lord Danvers aka Regency Hero in Setting Ane ("Rakish Bachelor") has recently become their guardian, although all sisters are over 21 and perfectly capable of taking intendance of themselves. They all don't wish to marry because of their parents' UNHAPPY MARRIAGE and I use caps lock deliberately to underline how much this fact is spoonfed to a reader throughout the whole book.

Marcus hears out Arabella'southward (the eldest sis) arguments on this, nods his caput in understanding and pretty much goes all: "yeah, yeah, you lot wanna be contained, I get information technology but volition states I'm to be your guardian and so IDC, A MAN IS Hither TO DO HIS DUTY AND Accept Intendance OF YOU Now"

And then, after exactly two witty exchanges with Arabella, a human who earlier proclaims won't exist shackled with marriage that fast, promptly changes his mind to "GoTTa MArrY HeR ASAP" (this, actually, I could've perhaps taken as a plausible plot advancement in regency romance but the manner it was written didn't really convince me that his change of heed was anything but a passing fancy).

Just the worst function is the way Marcus goes nearly "convincing" Arabella that they should marry - their whole "courting" looks pretty much similar this:

i) Marcus is tirelessly "silencing her protests with his fierce/passionate/otherwise engaging kisses"

two) Marcus is "taking the choice away from her" every bit Arabella debates whether to welcome his advances or not

three) Marcus is practically dragging Arabella to his sleeping room at 1 betoken (he really barges into her bedroom at nighttime, uninvited, they quarrel and Arabella is very much "Get TF OUT OF Here" but he kisses her to interrupt her and then he drags her to his sleeping room for sex - her first time likewise - to interrupt the whole argument)

(the whole scene pretty much reads equally if a caveman is dragging away his woman to his cave)

Common cold me quondam-fashioned (or perhaps new-fashioned) but while I find this courtship many, many things (agonizing at best, rapey at worst), I don't find it sexy in the least.

Perhaps it could wing for 17-year-quondam me reading these books for the first fourth dimension but equally a jaded seasoned reader with some personal experiences under her chugalug, I'm proverb a difficult, firm GTFO to characters similar this. Marcuses of the earth take, at least in my opinion, overstayed their welcome in the romance world besides - they but don't belong here anymore.

Other than that, characters seemed very apartment to me and I just didn't feel their connection or didn't experience connected to them at all. I might endeavor (re)reading the adjacent in the series just out of curiosity, to meet if it better holds up to pressure of time simply correct at present I need something good to launder out the bitter taste this story left in my rima oris.

The courtship and love scenes were quite well washed and the passion between the couple was fiery. Just it was the care and protectiveness of H that makes the book. He works hard to repair all the past and present hurt in her life.

I am looking forwards to reading next books in this series and more from Ms. Jordan.

So after hearing great things about the Courtship War series I decided that I needed to give this i a shot. Since my library has the whole series ( I think??). I wanted to kickoff from the get-go, non knowing if it would be like shooting fish in a barrel to catch on or not. You never know though. I found To Pleasance A Lady an amazing story. It definitely sank its tender hooks into my reading spirit and wouldn't let me get. I think I am still feeling the after affects...tingles and more!! There was much that I enjoyed about the way this story played out....merely I loved that fifty-fifty if the plot seemed a fleck normal, it definitely didn't plough out the style I expected and it had a sure unique vocalisation to information technology that appealed to my romantic side.

Arabella and her sisters have been ruined in the eyes of society because of the sins of her parents. Afterwards her mother abandons them to exit the country with her lover, and her father losing their fortune to gambling and being killed over a woman in a duel. The 3 sisters are then under the stewardship of their uncle, who could intendance less nearly them. So Arabella and her sisters create a schoolhouse for teaching young girls the finishing touches to exist able to deal with the Ton (those who are born into wealth but non into Elite families). And so they are places under the wardship of Marcus Pierce. Marcus doesn't treat the responsibility of the 3 Loring sisters, who have become a pain in the backside. The eldest has been sending him letter of the alphabet after letter of the alphabet, until she arrives and practically threatens him with his own rapier. When he sees her beauty and peppery spirit, he is instantly wanting her in his bed, simply fifty-fifty more than that, she makes him consider marriage for the outset fourth dimension. Then with his responsibleness to marry them all off, he decides to pursue Arabella and courtroom her. Arabella could intendance less about getting married again, just when she enters a dangerous wager with him, she wonders if she volition be able to resist his charm and sensual nature.

Arabella is a vehement heroine, very passionate and willful and protective of her sisters. She is willing to do any it takes to secure their welfare, even her ain happiness. Arabella has a very upbeat personality, willing to put a rapier to her ward's throat to go his attention. (definitely one of my favorite moments of the book :) She doesn't back down from a fight, and I really admired her as the lucifer for Marcus. Now lets discus Marcus...a gorgeous specimen of a man. I just fell in lust with him...then dearest came later of course. (that is how it normally works right??) When he finds someone he feels he could marry, he doesn't hide from his feelings. He isn't one to back downwards from any challenge, especially from a adult female. He is very persuasive, possessive (non likewise much though), has enough Alpha traits to be appealing, and perfectly balanced with his carefree personality. These two just made me express joy so much, their connectedness is instantaneous, and there wasn't any moment that I didn't experience their connexion.

I am so thrilled to have plant a new series that I am excited to read. As the first installment, I accept no complaints at all except for the youngest sis (I thought she was a bit extreme in trying to proceed Arabella and Marcus apart) But other than that, I couldn't find any mistake with this. It instantly grabbed my attention, and I had no result reading it in a few hours. It definitely quenched my romantic thirst. Information technology wasn't a iffy book or a hard to get into. Information technology starts out with Arabella and Marcus have a fleck of a disharmonism, and I loved the instant passion that flares between these two. Such sizzling scenes it could burn down the house or apartment or condo (or wherever you are reading). There is 1 battle later some other, merely its very amusing and gets your spirits upwardly. I can't wait for the side by side in the series!!!

"We will wait you lot in the hall should you need defending."
He saw Arabella stiffen at the quip, but then she laughed, a low melodious sound that once more fired his senses.
"I promise not to do him bodily harm."
A Pity, was Marcus'southward first thought; he might have appreciated seeing what she could do his body.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I do not see how I can state my position more clearly, Lord Danvers. I won't marry you lot for all the spices in India. Is that articulate enough for you to understand?"
He raised an amused eyebrow. "Do you know how many women would be elated to receive an offer of marriage from me?"
"And then apply to any of them. Doubtless they will be deliriously happy to accept. I would not."
"I don't desire whatever other adult female. I take chose you, Arabella, and I mean to have you lot."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We will non be having a nuptials night. And you cannot kiss me witless to convince me otherwise."
When his eyes narrowed speculatively on her moth, Arabella realized her mistake. "That was not a challenge," she hurriedly said.
"It was a challenge. My male pride is at stake."
"Marcus..." she exclaimed as he reached for her.
The smile he gave her was utterly beautiful and utterly maddening. "Let me demonstrate, darling."
Before she could scurry out of harm's fashion, he pulled her onto his lap and into his artillery. Arabella opened her mouth in protest, but he took possession of it with searing deliberation. Clasping her nape in a business firm hold, he gave her a lingering, blatantly sexual osculation that heated her claret and fix her pulse racing.

Marcus enjoys living a available'due south life and carousing around with his best friends, Andrew Moncrief, the Duke of Arden, and Heath Griffin, Marquess of Claybourne. Marcus was formerly a businesswoman, just after the death of a distant relative, he inherited an earldom, including the responsibility of iii wards. He is encumbered with the three Loring sisters, who have no fortune and have been single way too long, which means finding them husbands.

When the eldest sister, Arabella, visits him in his London abode, Marcus is struck speechless because he has never met a adult female quite like her. Arabella is a self-proclaimed spinster and bluestocking. She adores her independence and, always since she was jilted by a onetime fiancé, she doesn't want to be married and would rather spend her days teaching manners and order values to wealthy young women who were non born to parents with titles. Every bit Arabella states her case, Marcus can't help just wonder what her luscious lips would feel similar confronting his ain. He decides he volition not marry Arabella off to someone else, but will court and ally her himself. He only has to convince Arabella to have his plans.

Arabella thinks the constitute of marriage is a joke since her mother ran fashion with her lover, leaving her begetter in disgrace and the family in ruins. Eventually, her father ended up dying in a duel, and Arabella and her sisters were sent to live with an indifferent uncle. Arabella has always watched over her younger sisters; Roslyn, the dazzler of the three, and the youngest, Lilian, who is quite the wild one. Marcus writes Arabella to say he will be residing with them. Arabella will try her all-time to make Marcus encounter why she is and so against marriage. But when Marcus makes a wager with Arabella that she will have his hand in marriage in ii weeks, she decides to play this game, thinking she can withhold her angel from him. But Marcus is quite skilled at seduction, and Arabella is yet very much an innocent in the areas of dearest. Equally these two begin to learn nearly each other and what passions they enjoy, Arabella has to make up one's mind if she will surrender everything she has worked for and marry Marcus without love. Just Marcus has fallen in love with Arabella and will endeavor his best to show her that she is the merely woman for him, and they can have a marriage very unlike from her parents.

If you are looking for a typical historical romance with that independent, and spunky heroine, and the hero who shows her the delights of lovemaking, TO Pleasure A LADY has this perfect scenario. Arabella may tend to grate on the nerves, merely it is quite enjoyable to watch her fall in honey, that is, into the arms of Marcus, the handsome earl. Forth with Marcus'southward good friends, Andrew and Heath (who will surely have their own stories to come), Arabella has no option but to succumb to Marcus'southward lovemaking skills. The other Loring sisters, Roslyn and Lilian, bring some witty relief to the story as Arabella has the hard decision, whether or not to continue to be alone, or be with a man who may not love her the way she wants to be loved. Eventually, her younger sisters are the voice of reason, and Arabella decides to alive in the moment, which means with Marcus.

Nicole Jordan has set into motion 2 time to come stories with Roslyn and Lilian that should exist interesting, since Marcus has two eligible male person friends. Roslyn'due south tale, the second book in The Courting Wars, comes out in March 2008 nether the title of TO BED A Dazzler. Then Lilian'due south story, TO SEDUCE A BRIDE, appears in April. TO PLEASURE A LADY is a very like shooting fish in a barrel read with no evil villain or secondary mystery that many historical romances seem to take. The love scenes are plentiful and creative, and by the end, you wish the all-time for Marcus and his lovely Arabella, the bluestocking of his centre and soul.

An enjoyable introduction to the series, just I am hoping the next v books are not post-obit this same plot formula. Female afraid to go married, male has to go to extraordinary measures to subdue female to go her to the change.

Maybe I read too many of these HRs and now am getting used to the plot structure and I am tired of information technology. Male and female fight dear and do non realize they are in love until the last 1/four of the book. Just once I 'd like to see this realization made in the beginning, then let the obstacles embark until the happy ending.

I had a really hard time getting into this book and and so finishing it. Information technology just wasn't that practiced. Primarily the effect was a lack of character evolution. They were very one dimensional.

Arabella'due south problems were repeated ad nauseam but they never developed into anything truly deep. Repeating the same problems over and over over again isn't the same as character development. I never felt attached to her and her complete unwillingness to fall in love eliminated whatsoever truthful possibly for any emotional development. She felt exactly the same for the whole book, until the very end when she didn't. I never got whatsoever feels from her. Supposedly she felt driven by passion but it never seemed similar she felt a pull towards Marcus. She responded to his advances, merely she never made whatever on her own and was totally fine, salvage for a bit of disappointment, when he wasn't making them.

Marcus had absolutely no development at all. We're never told nearly his motivations, his past, his fears or desires. At the finish of the book I know a few of his interests, a little about his parents matrimony and his friends. And thats it. I retrieve only a handful of paragraphs were spent on developing him. Even when he'south rejected by Arabella in the finish after he's fallen in love with her, we don't get to witness any of his inner thoughts or feelings about information technology. The few scenes we did get where we got to witness the development of his feelings for Arabella were good. I did go some practiced feels from him. But they were sparse.

There was a lot of sex in the book but I found it to be bromidic and on the boring side. And I don't mean that I wanted something kinkier or more risqué. I hateful that it lacked feeling. The scenes were described without much emotion being involved. I didn't feel passion because they were never frantic or drastic for each other. With the exception of one scene, where they finally have sex, almost every concrete scene was controlled and happened when they were planned for. I felt no tension, no lust. No agonized. No intensity of feeling. If every scene had the intensity of the first full sex activity scene, it would have been great. But unfortunately they didn't.

Lastly, I overall found the book to exist on the irksome side. Not much happens. They take a lot of sex. They talk very little and learn very little most each other. When it's mentioned that they want or love the other I kept wondering why. Every conversation between Arabella and her sisters is the same. They worry about her falling in dearest. She insists she's not. Reasons for not wanting marry are repeated. There's some stuff to do with the academy that Arabella runs, merely its just tea and dancing and described in passing. One student runs away and that's the "excitement" for the book. And even and then in that location is no conflict between Arabella and Marcus and information technology's resolved very chop-chop. And the story line with her mother is wrapped upwards in a few pages.

An old maid needs a guardian? What parallel universe does this have place? The first installment of a series that knows no end will leave you in tears---tears of frustration. An former maid needs a guardian? What parallel universe does this accept place? The showtime installment of a series that knows no end will go out y'all in tears---tears of frustration. The Regency period was notoriously total of societal constraints that should have been adhered to. I mean, if you're going to accept u.s. there, might as well give us the grand tour. Well, this isn't "Pride and Prejudice," and Arabella Loring is no Elizabeth Bennett.

The eldest sister of a group of whiny, selfish feminists needs no man! She's an independent woman who could practice without. When information technology'south decided her family must fall under the guardianship of a notorious rake, she's less than thrilled. Sounds familiar. I read this once. Forgive me if I don't wax nostalgic.

Marcus Pierce is cut from the aforementioned cloth as every rake in novels today. He's rich, alpine, nighttime and impossibly handsome. He'due south absolutely tickled to death to find out he's now responsible for unloading the Loring sisters. I feel your hurting, bro. Merely it'due south easier said than done since ALL of them are carrying serious emotional luggage. They come from a family that would have made excellent fodder for Jerry Springer. Don't enquire, but their father was a louse. An abusive louse. Aren't they all?

Anyhoo, Arabella tries to run into as Lara Croft with her fencing displays and riding skills. I suppose this is when Marcus decides he'southward got to accept her. He plans to find husbands for the baggage and challenges Arabella to resist his charms. The author would accept usa believe he has many.

Really, they're then ridiculous I nearly died of laughter. He'southward rich. He'due south good-looking. And he knows how to delight a lady in bed. He's so confident, he challenges Arabella. If she can resist him, fine. If non, then she's got to marry him. UGH! So begins the seduction and a downward spiral into hilarity.

Marcus and peppery feminist Arabella suddenly tin can't keep their hands off each other. What is this? Does she have no cocky-respect? Nope. Equally a feminist, she'southward an embarrassment. She quickly falls for Marcus' roaming hands, amongst other things. I won't spoil it, simply at that place is a scene that is completely out of character for a fourth dimension where women were supposed to wait for a wedding ring before attempting. And when she does, oh boy. Gross, and where's the hand sanitizer?

Afterward this, Arabella happily dispenses with her virtue. Birth command in the way of a brandy-soaked sponge is described as being completely reliable. No unplanned pregnancy hither! And then in that location is Fanny. The Cyprian, or what I similar to call what Julia Roberts' character did for a living in "Pretty Woman."

Why pretend? Just Fanny is practically worshipped by the Loring sisters as a paragon of feminist empowerment whose advice is tantamount to God. Fanny is in every Courtship Wars novel and the sisters rely on her for communication about men. No self-respecting lady in high club at that time would dare carry herself with such a woman. If she were a member of the lower classes, mayhap. But Arabella and her sisters are well-connected and don't seem concerned about sullying the family name by their association with honey Fanny.

The novel proceeds to wax poetic about Fanny and her vast cauldron of knowledge regarding the opposite sexual activity. Marcus and Arabella go along to exercise it everywhere they see fit, never minding that she has impressionable siblings who might be privy to their affair. Doesn't affair. It'south all good. Arabella is the master of her own destiny!

Arguments, misunderstandings, and more ensue until a conclusion that is most equally exciting as watching paint dry. I accept that back, I might accept fun watching Bob Ross. The ending sets upwardly other characters and plots for the subsequent sequels. If y'all like this one, you'll similar the others. I tried to like this writer, I really did.

But I approximate I'k just an old-fashioned girl at heart. I savor dashing men with romantic souls who don't accost their wards in wide daylight. One star for existence silly, for placing Fanny on an altar, and for throwing Arabella's fiery independence out with the sleeping accommodation pot.

Just an ok read. I did like Marcus but Arabella was a fiddling annoying. I did wonder why Marcus continued trying so difficult with her. I did skim some at the stop bc I got bored w the whole Arabella sleeping w Marcus simply refusing marriage to have her independence. Non really an emotional connection to either character but I did like Marcus meliorate than Arabella.

Arabella didn't know what she was in for when she made that wager with Marcus. Information technology was fun to spotter her try and evade his advances past having her pupils effectually or making the food salty. But when she finally surrendered to learn about touch and taste well all bets were off! In the end it was a fun book with entertains characters!

Recommends it for: fans of mary balogh, elizabeth hoyt, tessa cartel.
The outset of a slap-up serial, I believe. I similar Marcus a lot, but Arabella not so much. It's a little bit anticipated, but some moments save it for me. The last scene it´south actually good.
Can't wait for the other books, as usual in this kind of books, the friendship between the males and females is more fun and leaves you lot wanting more than.
